For thousands of years, the Nipmuc people have cared for this land. The Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band—whose ancestors lived here—still carry that responsibility today. Their traditional knowledge of the land is widely recognized as vital for healthy farms, forests, and water.
With the state seeking new owners for Lampson Brook Farm, Belchertown has a once-in-a-lifetime chance. The Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band is ready to step in as caretakers—not just for ownership, but for renewal and responsibility…true relationship with the land.
This isn’t new. Nipmuc farmers across Massachusetts already run sustainable farms rooted in healthy food, community, and culture. They have strong partnerships, experience winning grants, and a commitment to share their success.
Current farmers, gardeners, and youth programs like 4-H will keep their leases. The Nipmuc plan recognizes the work NESFI started.
Indigenous stewardship means care, not extraction. It protects open space, wildlife, and local agriculture—for our children and grandchildren.
Belchertown could lead the way. We can be the first town in Massachusetts to return state land to an Indigenous tribe.
